Black Cleaver has been changed in 9 patches since release in Patch 1.1. 2 buffs, 2 nerfs, 5 adjustments. Most recently adjusted in Patch 7.0.
Unique passive - Chase
- Unique passive renamed from Rage to Chase.
General
- Replaces Hextech Black Cleaver.
- Health increased from 350 to 400.
Unique passive - Sunder
- Armor reduction per stack increased from 4% to 6%.
- Maximum stacks reduced from 6 to 4.
Unique passive - Rage
- Removed: No longer grants bonus movement speed from kills.
- New effect: You gain Melee 40 / Ranged 20 bonus movement speed toward enemies with maximum stacks of Sunder.

- Kindlegem + Long Sword + Phage + 500 gold = 3000 gold.
Stats:
- 20 ability haste, 40 attack damage, 400 health.
Unique Passive - Sunder:
- Dealing physical damage to an enemy champion inflicts 6% armor reduction for 6 seconds, refreshing on subsequent hits and stacking up to 4 times for 24% reduction.
Unique Passive - Rage:
- Basic attacks on-hit grant Melee 20 / Ranged 10 bonus move speed for 2 seconds. You also gain Melee 40 / Ranged 20 bonus move speed toward enemies with maximum stacks of Sunder.
- Limited to 1 Hextech Black Cleaver.
New Recipe:
- Kindlegem + Long Sword + Phage + 500 gold = 3000 gold.
- Old Recipe: Kindlegem + Phage + 900 gold = 3000 gold.
Black Cleaver has solid stats all around, but recently it’s been purchased so frequently and is starting to become an item that is purchasable by any Attack Damage champion. To combat this, we’re making it more difficult to stack to push it more towards excelling in sustained combat and multi-hit spells.

- Maximum stacks increased from 5 to 6.
Black Cleaver has become a dominant first and second choice item for most fighters and even some assassins and marksmen as well. We’re cutting back on the amount of haste it grants to make the item focus more on raw combat power and less about being able to use your abilities more frequently.

Black Cleaver has been underperforming in comparison to other options like Trinity Force and Death's Dance in every slot for most fighters. We don't want to swing too far in the opposite direction, so we're cautiously giving it a light buff to help it compete.

Black Cleaver is being overshadowed by Trinity Force too often. We are giving it a bump to help it keep up with the faster pace of the game and to diversify item build paths.
